My Top Ten Apps

Everybody has a list of applications in which they cannot surely live without.  Applications that are considered a must.  Usually these applications are reflective of the user's needs and preferences.

Well, here's my top ten applications.  For those who are yet to know, I am a Linux desktop user may it be on KDE or Gnome.  I compose correspondences, do websites and some Linux system administration.  I only use my Windows partition to play games.  Here it goes:

1. GNOTE (Note Taker) – Once upon a time I raved about Tomboy notetaker until I discovered BasketNote. However I found both applications quite sluggish and gobble resources that I personally think is too much for a note taker.  I discovered Gnote by accident, I was looking for Tomboy via synaptic and was surprised that there actually is Gnote which is an exact clone of Tomboy, only that it is written on C++ and doesn't need Mono.  I was sold the first time I saw it.  If you are a Windows user, you might try Tomboy for it is now cross platform.

2. OPENOFFICE (Office Suite)– I write letters and articles everyday and OpenOffice.org fits the bill perfectly.  Only recently, I learned that you could actually use a Tagalog dictionary to check the spelling of your Tagalog article, ain't that neat?
3.VLC (Media Player) – I love watching movies and listening to music but I am not a big fan of “heavy music” players like Amarok and the liks.  VLC is simple, light and it just works.

3. WinFF (Media Converter) - Just drag and drop your media files on the conversion window, select a format, and press Convert button.  Easy does it!

4. FILEZILLA (FTP Client) – I chose this over GFTP simply because its much more stable especially when I try to transfer a lot of files at once.

5. JOOMLA! (Content Management System) – Joomla is an easy to use Content Management System that I user for most of my website projects.  Its free and works for almost any kind of website.

6. K3B (Disc Burner) – K3B is the best disc burner on the face of the planet, nuff said.  Too bad its only available in Linux.

7. KTORRENT (torrent client) – Perfect for torrent downloads.  If you are on Windows, uTorrent is your best bet.

8. KOMPOZER (html editor) – Although I use Joomla CMS on my websites, I sometimes have to inject a few html codes here and there.  Kompozer does the job for me.

9. XAMPP – Xampp deploys LAMP in an instant, without much hassle.  I use it with Joomla!

10. FIREFOX (web browser) -  Have you installed the latest version?!  If no, you should!

Runner ups will be Adobe Photoshop 7.0 (works with Wine), Pidgin Instant Messenger, Frostwire, DVDShrink, VirtualBox, SSH and HTOP.

Why didn't I just called this my top ten Linux apps?  I can't do that because OpenOffice, VLC, Filezilla, XAMPP, Kompozer, Firefox and Joomla can be both used in Linux and Windows.

So what's your top ten?
